What to do in Barcelona on a Rainy Day
A rainy day is a rare occasion in Barcelona but if you are as unlucky as I am, you may experience a few. In a city that thrives on outdoor activities, it can be difficult to know what to do when the rain ruins your day at the beach. No worries, there is a plethora of things, and not just museums, to do indoors in Barcelona.
My favorite place to start on a rainy day is Cafe de L'Opera. Cozy up with a friend or a book and have a drink. I suggest the chocolate con churros or a coffee with brandy. Both will warm you up enough to brave the rain. After you’ve had your fill, head to L´aquarium de Barcelona. Here you’ll find thousands of crazy sea creatures, octopuses, and even penguins. Plus, you’ll get an awesome view of the Mediterranean while staying dry and warm.
Of course, a museum is always a good option on a rainy day and there are plenty to choose from in Barcelona. A couple of favorites include Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Museu de la Xocolata, and Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
If you would rather shop but dread the idea of walking from shop to shop in the rain, L´illa Diagonal and La Maquinista are enormous shopping complexes that include enough stores to keep you occupied for hours.
Another good way to pass the rainy day is with a movie. Cines Renoir has two locations in Barcelona and shows films in their original version, which means the films aren’t dubbed in Spanish. Cines Renoir also shows Spanish films if you are interested in getting a taste of Spanish pop culture.
To relax after a long day of rain and plenty of walking, I suggest Aire de Barcelona, an incredible warehouse renovated to resemble with an Arabian bathhouse. Soak in one of the many different baths and enjoy a massage. A soothing bath, aromatherapy, and a 30 minute message will cost you 55 €.
For dinner, I recommend La Flauta, a tapas bar with a sleek interior and a good selection of wines. To end the night, I suggest La Fira, one of my favorite bars in Barcelona. Like a fun-house from an amusement park, this bar has distorted mirrors, swings, and pieces of old, rusted fair rides.
